Every day, my daily commute of just 30 miles in and out of Washington, D.C., stretches out over nearly two exhausting hours. This arduous journey drains precious time that I could spend with my family and pets, leaving me exhausted before my workday even begins. This experience is shared by countless Marylanders who face the same ordeal, grappling with congested roads and sluggish traffic that feel never-ending.

Route 4, from Dunkirk Town Center to Suitland Parkway, is a primary artery for many commuters residing in Southern Maryland's suburbs and working in Washington, D.C. The current state of this route inadequately supports the volume of daily traffic, resulting in prolonged travel times and heightened frustration. 

We propose a practical, forward-thinking solution to alleviate this congestion: the addition of two lanes in each direction on Route 4, extending from Dunkirk Town Center to Suitland Parkway, in addition to widening the entire Suitland Parkway. This expansion should include making these roads limited access, similar to highways that effectively manage traffic flows, and increasing speed limits where appropriate, allowing for more efficient and safer commutes.

Implementation of these changes will not only enhance the quality of life for those who rely on these roads daily, but also improve economic opportunities by providing easier access to and from the heart of the nation's capital. Well-planned expansions and upgrades can reduce travel times, decrease fuel consumption and emissions, and foster a more sustainable commuting environment.
