Expand ADA service animal eligibility beyond dogs and miniature horses

As someone living with anemia, I face the constant risk of dizziness and fainting. It's a reality that many of us with chronic health conditions grapple with daily. In those moments of vulnerability, we rely heavily on our companions for support and safety. However, under the current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines, only dogs and miniature horses are recognized as service animals. This limitation poses a significant barrier for those of us whose needs could be met by other animals who are just as capable and beloved.
Current ADA regulations do not acknowledge the diverse range of animals that can provide crucial support to people with disabilities. For example, many individuals report that their cats, birds, or even rodents have innate abilities to sense distress, respond to emergencies, or provide significant emotional support. These animals may not physically guide us like dogs or miniature horses do, but their assistance is no less essential or impactful.
Empirical evidence supports the therapeutic benefits of animals. According to a study from the American Psychological Association, pet owners report better emotional well-being and lower stress levels. Additionally, the CDC emphasizes the role of companion animals in reducing blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and feelings of loneliness. With such research backing the health benefits of various animals, it's clear that service animals should not be restricted to just two species.
By expanding the definition of service animals, we can make strides towards inclusivity and provide people with disabilities more flexible and personalized support systems.
I urge the Department of Justice and relevant legislative bodies to revise the ADA guidelines to include a broader spectrum of animals as service animals.
