Expand Access to Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Education in Vermont

Expand Access to Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) Education in Vermont
The Issue
As an educator invested in the growth and development of students, I have seen firsthand how important Family and Consumer Sciences (FCS) education is in preparing young people for life beyond high school. These courses go beyond teaching isolated skills—they provide practical, real-world tools for independence, including nutrition, financial literacy, communication, wellness, and career readiness. These are foundational competencies that support students in becoming confident, capable adults.
This issue is also personal to me. I am a Vermont educator and a parent of students in public schools. Like many families, I care deeply about ensuring that all students, not just those in certain districts, have access to meaningful, well-rounded educational opportunities that support life readiness.
Across Vermont, access to Family and Consumer Sciences varies widely depending on district resources, staffing, and program availability. While some students have strong access to these learning experiences, others have limited or no exposure to them during their secondary education.
Research from organizations such as the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences highlights the importance of FCS education in supporting adult independence, workforce readiness, and community engagement. These skills are widely recognized as essential components of preparing students for life after graduation.
This petition is intended to highlight community interest in Family and Consumer Sciences education and to encourage continued conversation about how Family and Consumer Sciences is supported across Vermont schools.
This includes consideration by education stakeholders, including district leaders, educators, and state-level policymakers, regarding how students across Vermont can more consistently access Family and Consumer Sciences education through electives, career and technical education pathways, or other flexible programming models.
Strengthening access to Family and Consumers Sciences education benefits students, families, communities, and the workforce. Education is not only about academic achievement, but also about preparing young people for the practical realities of adulthood.
By signing this petition, you are supporting continued awareness and conversation about the importance of equitable access to Family and Consumer Sciences education for Vermont students.
Together, we can help ensure that students graduate with the skills needed for successful and fulfilling lives.
