Exempt Graduate Students from Convocation at Liberty University

The Issue

Due to the high intensity and stressful nature of life as a graduate student at Liberty University, convocation should be optional for residential graduate students. Graduate students confront multiple factors on a daily basis that complicates their lives. We have longer class sessions, and the assigned work, whether that be written assignments or readings, is given at a higher volume than undergraduate work. Likewise, most graduate students balance school life with a job or internship just in order to support themselves. That being said, having the obligation to attend a compulsory on a twice a week basis puts an increased amount of stress on an already strenuous schedule. At the current state of student life, most upper-level undergraduate and graduate students, a large percentage of the student population have moved off campus, many of them doing so in order to avoid having to go to convocation. Were convocation optional for graduate students, more students would live on campus, thereby improving community life and bringing in more revenue to the school. Making convocation mandatory can have a negative affect on student's spiritual lives. By having the obligation to go to convocation, students frequently compartmentalize worship and fellowship as something they are mandated to do by the school, rather than a personal joy. Just as Christ desires that we come to Him out of our own free will, and not out of force, so should students freely fellowship with each other due to a genuine desire rather than obligation. Overall, making convocation optional for graduate students would greatly aide and improve students' mental and spiritual lives by allowing them more time to do school work, as well as spending time with the Lord.
