On April 24, the Executive Committee of the Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture (“the MAC”) fired its new, heavily-recruited director Forrest Rodgers without cause.
Rodgers was hired by the MAC for his uncontested excellent history of museum-building, fundraising and staff management. In his short 8 months here he began laying the foundation to increase attendance, local public funding and private donations to offset ever dwindling state funding for the MAC.
The decision to fire Forrest Rodgers was made by a subset of the MAC’s Executive Committee – not by the full Board or Governor as required in the museum’s governing by-laws. Failure to provide any justification for this action suggest that the firing was purely personal. A subset of Executive Committee members, including two-year interim director Ron Rector, were used to running the Museum and saw their control over the MAC eroding. Allegedly encouraged by several long-time senior staff, this subset terminated Rodgers.
By their actions, the Executive Committee 1) let go of one of the most talented people with the knowledge and experience to save the MAC, and 2) exposed the MAC to an unlawful termination lawsuit.
Following the Executive Committee’s action, and without hearing from Rodgers, the Board affirmed the decision to fire.
After Rodgers’ firing, and after several unfavorable reports in local media, the MAC Board held a “public’ meeting on May 23. The MAC’s entire auditorium was filled with donors, supporters, volunteers, and MAC staff who voiced their outrage at the Executive Committee and Board actions. They DEMANDED Rodgers’ reinstatement and the Executive Committee’s resignation. Please see:
The community’s message is clear, yet Board members refused to respond – and completely ignored the concerns of MAC supporters.
Since then there have been hundreds of community and media requests to the Board for an explanation of its actions, and for Rodgers’ reinstatement. Please see all the following:
State funds are fast running out. Our only museum and cultural center's life is at stake here. Without sound leadership we will lose the MAC. Let it be clear, whether you are a MAC supporter or not, survival of this center is crucial to the future of Spokane. Please join us and make a stand. Don't let the MAC suffer a slow and painful death. Rather, fight for Rodgers’ reinstatement and his vision for a more vibrant MAC!
