Exclude Dyslexic Pupils from SPAG Marks at GCSE

The Issue

As an educator working closely with dyslexic pupils, I have witnessed first-hand the challenges they face in their academic journey. Dyslexia, a common learning difficulty that can cause problems with reading, writing and spelling, affects approximately 10% of the UK population (British Dyslexia Association). Despite this prevalence, our education system continues to penalize these students by including Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar (SPAG) marks in GCSE exams for English, Religious Studies, Geography and History. These marks account for 5% of their final grade.

This practice is not only unfair but also counterproductive. It places undue stress on dyslexic students who already struggle with these aspects due to their condition. Furthermore, it does not accurately reflect their understanding or knowledge of the subject matter.

School and workplaces are legally required to make ‘reasonable adjustments’ to support individuals diagnosed with dyslexia, to ensure they are not substantially disadvantaged.

I urge the relevant educational authorities to reconsider this policy. Excluding dyslexic pupils from SPAG marks at GCSE will level the playing field and provide them with equal opportunities to succeed academically. Let's advocate for a more inclusive education system that recognises and accommodates learning differences.

Please sign this petition if you believe in fair assessment practices for all students regardless of their learning difficulties.
