There is so much litter today, no one cares but that is about to change. What happens to the litter we dump in the streets? It often gets washed away by rain water and ends up in the ocean then washes up on our beaches. If the water becomes polluted from litter then we can no longer use it for drinking or for recreation. Currently there is 9 billion tons of litter dumped in the ocean every year. Yeah you heard me right 18 trillion pounds of trash. Animals may mistake the items of litter floating in the water as food and could choke on them or get tangled in it.The litter can also damage coral reefs. Think of all those animals that are getting hurt and even killed by all of that trash. Even humans can get hurt by all that trash.It is estimated that 1 million birds and 1 hundred thousand marine mammals and sea turtles die each year when they become trapped in plastic or eat it, perhaps mistaking it for a tasty treat. So what can we do to help? Well for starters if you find trash you can trow it away in a trash can. Also you can do your best to recycle and compost. You can also try to use metal cups and metal straws to reuse them, but if you cant then try to wash and reuse plastic but be careful with what you do with them. So please try to pitch in and help stop littering.
