The Issue

In an age where media and social media are easily accessible, there is a strong emphasis on idealized beauty on platforms such as Instagram, magazines and television. When seeing celebrities and models who are thought to have “perfect bodies”, individuals start to become critical of their own bodies and succumb to the pressure of living up to somewhat unrealistic standards. Due to the pressure of having a perfect body, many people had deal with body shaming. Body shaming became one of the serious issues in our society.

Body Shaming, by definition, is the act of making inappropriate and negative comments about another person’s weight or size. Frequently, this is something that overweight people are subjected to but there’s an increasing trend in criticizing those who look ‘too skinny’. It is a form of bullying and, as well as being humiliating, it can lead to short and long term psychological and health related issues. According to the National Eating Disorders Association, about 65% of people with eating disorder say that bullying just like body shaming contributed to their condition. Negative connotations about weight and body image can lead to low self-esteem, social isolation, poor body image, and has also been shown to directly contribute to the development of eating disorders.

Nobody should have to live in a world where they’re made to feel bad about their bodies by other people, especially considering people are often critical enough of their own appearance. In order to stop this, we should treating each other with respect, discussing weight with sensitivity and without judgment, and giving support and encouragement to people who struggle with weight management; behaviors everyone should display when interacting with people with obesity. Lastly, let's be one in stopping this kind of issue.
