Our society, as a whole, should disengage in teaching and using the imperial system.
The Issue
The Imperial System is the system we are using in the U.S. It is illogical and confusing. It uses so many different conversions methods. For example, we use centimeters (from the metric system) and convert it to and from inches which is 2. 54 cm per 1 in, whereas, in the metric system we use centimeters and meters and all you have to do is move the decimal place. 5 cm = 0.05 m. Moving decimal places is much less complicated than trying to remember all the different numbers you have to multiply to get different units. Also, only 3 countries in the entire world use the imperial system: the rest of the world uses the metric system. Changing over to the metric system would provide a benefit in international communications. There would have to be no more conversions between systems, and it would just be simple. My last point is that careers that are math and science based often use the metric system. This includes careers such as mechanical engineering, paramedics, and those in veterinary medicine. Teenagers often have to learn the metric system later on in their lifetime if they happen to take a class that needs it or if they go into a career that uses it. Some students think that the imperial system is easier, but if they had grown up learning the metric system, if schools taught it at a young age, then they would find it much more comfortable to use. They wouldn't have to relearn anything and we would be in sync with the rest of the world. If people actually thought about it, they would notice it takes longer to convert things in the imperial system. A majority of people do not know conversions by memory, they have to look up how many feet are in a mile or what a rod is (yes that is a form of imperial measurement). However, if you grow up learning the metric system then people would have a much easier time converting numbers. All they would have to remember is how many decimal places go with each beginning: centi is 0.01, Kilo is 1000, deci is 0.1, and mili is 0.001. That is so much simpler! So please sign my petition and end the disaster that is the imperial system.
