Why this petition matters

The constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 as altered guarantees the freedom of Thought, Conscience and Religion. The Hijab has been held by several courts of law to be protected by this right.

The Nursing and widwifery council of Nigeria that regulates the practice of nursing and midwifery in Nigeria, among other styles has approved "a shoulder length Hijab, gown and trousers" for Muslim nurses and nursing students who desire to wear it.

The Principal of the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex (OAUTHC), Dr. Awoseemo has infringed on the fundamental rights of Muslim students as well as the regulation of her profession.

This ugly incident happened on Monday, November 29, at the Tutor/Students' Congress held at the Nurses' house OAUTHC, Ile-Ife. She thereafter asked the affected students to write an undertaking that they would remove their Hijabs in order to remain as students in the school.

She has clearly shown that she is NOT FIT for the position she holds and she should be relieved of her duties in order to prevent religious chaos.

Our society will be better if all citizens of Nigeria have equal access, and are not discriminated against. With the outflow of health workers in the country, we need many more for our teeming population and we cannot afford to shut people out unjustly. This in the end will hurt us all.

Please sign this petition to uphold Human Rights, protect the Rights of Women and the Girl Child and to prevent religious crisis in Nigeria.
