Help us make major changes to the College of Nursing at Seton Hall University
The Issue
Seton Hall University’s College of Nursing, which is located in South Orange, NJ needs some serious changes to the nursing program. The curriculum needs to be adjusted, and most importantly the nursing department needs to get rid of numerous of Professors who do not teach. Most of the instructors stand in front of the class throughout the whole semester and they read straight from the textbook or powerpoint and they do not teach. Most professors do not even offer help to their students. Students are struggling in their classes and they are failing because these professors do not teach, how is that the student’s fault? We are not paying a huge amount of money to this school so these professors can come to class and read straight from the textbook or read off of the powerpoints. How are these nursing students expected to do well on the NCLEX if professors don’t teach? The NCLEX rate for Seton Hall University’s College of Nursing is extremely low, why is it low? Because most professors at the college of nursing do not teach nor do they prepare their students to pass the NCLEX.
All these years the passing grade for the college of nursing has been between a 70-73, and the department just recently increased the passing grade to a 77 because students who are graduating are not passing the NCLEX. This puts the nursing school’s reputation down, which also puts the program at risk for probation and it also puts the program at risk for losing accreditation. Because of this, the college of nursing increased the passing grade to a 77 and thought that putting this pressure on students is going to help them be more successful at passing the NCLEX. This is not fair; changing the passing grade from a 70-73 to a 77 is not going to make the nursing program better. What needs to be done is that the nursing department needs to make huge changes to their curriculum and most importantly hire professors that actually teach to prepare students for the NCLEX.
Also, the school gives a test every semester, called the “HESI”, which also used to be 5% a while ago, but the school also increased that to 10%. At one point, the professors use to tell us not to even bother to study for the HESI because it is only 5% of our grade and we’re going to the bad on it anyways, and all of a sudden they decided to increase the percentage of this test to 10%. How is that fair? These professors never encouraged us to study for these HESI’s and now the department increased the percentage just because they felt like it. Students who passed their NCLEX have stated that the HESI is nothing compared to the NCLEX and it does not prepare students to pass the NCLEX. In our final semester, receiving our degree depends on if we pass the HESI or not. How is that fair? After all these years of hard work we put into nursing, the HESI test will determine whether or not we will get our degree? Strongly disagreed. The NCLEX is the only test that will determine whether we can become a nurse or not. The NCLEX is the only test that will give us our license as a registered nurse. The HESI test is only used to kick people out of the nursing program so students will not get their degree and have a chance to sit for the NCLEX. This is all a business, it is a scam.
Increasing the passing grade, as well as the HESI percentage all of a sudden is not going to help students pass their NCLEX. What the program needs to do is make major changes to the curriculum and fire professors who do not teach, so these students who are paying so much for this private school will get their money’s worth and also get a better education, as well as successfully pass the NCLEX. I understand the nursing department wants to make changes to the program by increasing the passing grade and the HESI percentage, but this should ONLY be implemented for incoming freshman students, not for students who are already half way through the nursing program.
Please help us make major changes to this program. Please help us bring down the passing grade back to a 70-73, as well as the HESI to 5% because that is what was implemented when we first got accepted into the nursing program. Graduating and receiving our degree should not be determined on whether or not we pass the HESI test because the HESI is not going to give us our license as a registered nurse, the NCLEX will. We deserve to continue with the program with the passing grade we were accepted to the school with, and also the HESI should not stop us from graduating and getting our degree. Please support us to make changes to the program, and please help us get rid of professor’s who do not teach so students at Seton Hall’s College of Nursing can get a better education and successfully pass the NCLEX.
