END FGM
END FGM
The Issue
FGM is an invasive and distinctly harmful practice which effects not only the mental and physical wellbeing of individual women, but also the stereotypes which exist around women. Primarily FGM is proclaimed by endorsers as a practice of cleanliness and an operation meant to ensure chastity and celibacy until marriage, however by removal of the clitoris at such a young age the operation becomes an involuntary alteration of a woman’s lifelong ability to not only physically respond to sex, but also essentially their ability to desire it.
The outcomes of FGM indicate that the root of the practice exists in a desire to control and ultimately suppress female sexuality. Though this is where the problem stems from, the maintenance of this practice is largely due to the social normalization of it within the multiple African and South Asian countries where the amount of young girls who undergo FGM can exceed 90%.
Despite the wide reach of FGM , Evidence shows that extensive attempts to educate both those unaware of the issue and those who condone it has had an impact. In Egypt statistics showed that 96% of women 45 to 49 years old were cut while only 81% of women 15 to 19 years of age were cut. Though this does not seem like a massive leap in data, such a decrease in the number of people being cut is indicative of growth. With your support we can help change the fate of millions of young girls.
