Why this petition matters
Started by Concerned Citizen
OBJECTION to the application to create an EVENT VILLAGE to host Plett Rage and other festivals in an ENVIRONMENTALLY SENSITIVE HABITAT
Duration: 2022-2026 [FIVE YEARS], Plett Rage:7 days, Wanderbay festival: 7 Days, potentially more events
Location: Opposite Plett Airport entrance - Portion 33 of Farm Roodefontein no 440
Application: By Lucky Fish Events – temporary departure of land currently zoned for agricultural use to create a c. 5,000-person Event Village which includes camping and glamping facilities
Signatories object to the following points and considerations:
- The Event Village is in an environmentally sensitive area and events of this nature will severely impact the delicate fauna and flora – this is because of the required clearing of vegetation, and concomitant noise- and vibration pollution.
- The Event Village poses a fire risk due to dense vegetation, fynbos and other indigenous flora found in this area. This is exacerbated by dry and windy conditions typically experienced in Decembers.
- The Event Village is dangerous for eventgoers due to the high risk of fire, and only one entry / exit point coupled with the significant increase in road traffic and pedestrians along Robberg Road in Decembers.
- The Event Village is within 300m of the Robberg Coastal Corridor and is in the centre of the Roodefontein-South Conservancy, both specifically established to encourage indigenous fauna and flora to return and flourish in this area for public enjoyment.
- Affected businesses and residences have invested a lot of time and money in the area and will be negatively impacted. Businesses include Ouland Royal, The Space Between and several accommodation facilities. This will result in job losses.
