Thousands of Dolphins and Porpoises are dying unnecessarily in gill nets in Europe, every year!

The European Union made a serious error of judgement when it introduced the 2004 Pinger Mandate (known as the 812/2004) which includes the UK gill net fleet.

Why?

Because the mandate to use Pingers only applies to gill net vessels over 12 meters in length which means that 75% of registered European gill net vessels are not required to use Pingers!

This serious error means that there are thousands of gill net vessels fishing in European waters without using Pingers.

Which means that thousands of Dolphins and Porpoises are dying unnecessarily in gill nets in Europe, every year!

In order for this to stop, the EU must support the use of Pingers on ALL gill nets in European waters and amend the 812/2004 Pinger mandate currently in place

AND IT MUST BE DONE NOW;  not next year or the year after that, or even next decade

How many thousands of Dolphins and Porpoises need to die before the decision makers see the error they have made and act?
