The People X started this petition to European Parliament and

While a few profit, most suffer from the current crisis. This dynamic started long before Covid-19 and affects the most precarious parts of our societies, as well as the eroding middle-class and small business owners. The economic conditions that foster a precarious society are not in the interest of the vast majority of citizens.

We are petitioning for a European-wide Universally-applied Basic Income (UBI) that would provide a “periodic cash payment unconditionally delivered to all on an individual basis, without means-test or work requirement.” (BIEN network)

This issue has the potential for a large and diverse base across the political spectrum, and is gaining critical mass. "UBI is one of those rare policies that is supported by both the left and the right, though for very different reasons. While the left believes it could help tackle poverty and reduce inequalities, the right sees it as an opportunity to scale down welfare systems, cut costs, and incentivize unemployed workers to get jobs." (Astrid Landon, AreWeEurope)

According to a 2016 survey, 64% from 10,000 respondents in the EU would vote for basic income if they were given the choice. Only 4% said they would stop working.

In 2020, we are more than ever in need of strong societal visions. Fiscal compensation for losses during the first wave showed how powerful governmental support can be for individuals, communities, and small businesses. The anxiety around covering basic living and working costs was deferred – imagine how much we could thrive if this anxiety was eliminated all the time, if we had less stress and more space to imagine ways to heal the earth, to fulfil our lives’ purposes, to help each other, etc. We have a chance to implement such safety nets for the long term, creating some economic and social stability in an ever more unpredictable world.

Now is the time for Universal Basic Income. We see how quickly things can shift and how governments can implement radical changes in response to a crisis, so let’s use this moment to demand more sustainable conditions for all.

So be it, see to it. UBIFEU
