Canada to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest

The Issue

Canada and The European Union (EU) are strategic partners. Relationship with Canada is the EU's oldest formal relationship with any industrialised country, officially dating back to 1959. They continue to work closely together in a number of areas from trade and security to agriculture and education. Canada and Europe share strong historic and cultural ties.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, Eurovision Song Contest (ESC) has been the Longest Running Annual TV Music Competition in the world, with the annual audience of over 200 million people. Originating from 1956, this cultural event brings together countries not only according to geography but, more importantly, according to shared values and aspirations. Aside from the European continent, countries like Armenia, Australia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Israel, and others have been taking part in the ESC.

Being a member of  the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and an associate member of The European Broadcasting Union (EBU), Canada should formally apply to participate in the Eurovision Song Contest in order to join the international family of Eurovision. This initiative will bring Canada closer to other ESC' participants and further enrich cultural exchange.
