Remove Patent \ Trademark on the word Wogs
The issue
There have been rumours circulating online that the word wogs has been patented \ Trademarked. This word has great significance to many New Australians. Originally it was coined as an ethnic or racist term and applied to a wide range of people mainly from the Mediterranean countries. It was considered derogatory and offensive. Thanks to comedians such as Nick Giannopoulos, George Kapiniaris, Mary Coustas, Lex Marinos, Joe Avati, Simon Palomares, Frank Lotito, Vince Sorrenti, Sooshi Mango and many others the face of Australian entertainment was changed forever and the word was taken from the racists and bigots and changed into something friendly and good-natured. The word does not belong to anyone individual or organisation but to every first generation Greek, Italian, Maltese, Serbian, Lebanese ( and all other migrants ) who endured racism to create a homogenised and rich Australian culture. This Petition is not a witch hunt and it’s not intended to embarrass or harass any particular individual or organisation. The intent is to show how powerful the word is in the Australian psyche and how passionately we feel about it. Nobody should be custodian of this word. It belongs to everyone and if it has been patented or trademarked then we hope the holder sees this petition and chooses to release it.
