Boycott Gap, Kohl's, Levi Strauss, Ross Stores, Urban Outfitters

The Issue

According to the Worker Rights Consortium (workersrights.org) these publicly owned American companies have used the current pandemic situation to either cancel or grossly stretch out paying for merchandise already ordered or shipped, leaving third world garment workers to suffer great hardship -  "Which Brands Are Honoring Commitments to Suppliers and Workers?"  That website also lists many companies both large and small which have not resorted to this tactic. Also see article in The Guardian, June 10 2020  "Anger at huge shareholder payout as US chain Kohl's cancels $150m in orders."

Understandably these companies are trying to navigate a difficult situation caused by temporary store closures. However being large publicly held companies they can easily tap the equity markets to issue stock for a small fraction of their current market valuations to raise the funds to pay these commitments; thereby acting responsibly and ethically.

At a time when our country is re-examining both racial and economic injustice at home, we should not forget about those third world workers without social safety nets who allow us to enjoy relative inexpensive clothing.
