As a student myself, I understand first-hand the burden of paying for school food. Children are sent to school for education and empowerment. Yet, the constant worry about lunch money can undeniably serve as a distraction from this ultimate goal. It's high time we institute universal free lunches in our schools nationally.

The US Department of Agriculture substantiates this need by revealing that 30 million school children benefited from the National School Lunch Program in 2019. Despite this, not every child is eligible and many still struggle with lunch debt or go hungry(USDA, 2019). This denies them their right to a healthy, nutritious meal that supports their learning and development. Furthermore, a study found that when children’s basic nutritional needs are met, they achieve higher scores in school and have better concentration and energy levels (Tufts University, 2018).
