Did you know that Arizona does not have a state mushroom? As an amateur mycologist, I would like to propose that the Western Giant Puffball (Calvatia booniana) be given this honor for its unique characteristics and significant role in the Arizona ecosystem. On a memorable foraging trip near Flagstaff, I discovered a staggering 60 pounds of these magnificent fungi, illuminating a small patch of forest with their unmistakable size. These giant puffballs were not just bountiful but brought joy to my friends and family as I was able to share my find and their culinary potential with them. 

Being able to forage and discover new species of fungus is a pleasure unlike any other. Culinary enthusiasts and nature lovers alike appreciate the Giant Puffball for its versatility in various dishes, powders, and seasonings. Moreover, it is a perfect symbol for the state of Arizona. Just as our Grand Canyon State is renowned for its grandeur and scale, the Giant Puffball mushroom stands out for its impressive dimensions. 

It is time we celebrate the rich biodiversity and the subtle treasures of our state's landscape by granting the Giant Puffball the recognition it deserves. Let the State of Arizona lead the way in acknowledging the importance of fungi in our environment by naming the Giant Puffball mushroom as our state mushroom.
