Establish The A. Mason School-A Tuition-Free Charter School in the Oxon Hill/Clinton Area

The Issue

The educational achievement gap is a pressing issue in Maryland, particularly among minority students. According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), only 14% of Black students and 15% of Hispanic students in Maryland are proficient in reading at grade level. This is significantly lower than the national average for these groups, which stands at 35% and 37%, respectively (NAEP, 2019).

Establishing a charter school focused on accelerating achievement for underperforming minority students to prepare students for college and career readiness can be an effective solution to this problem. Charter schools have proven successful in other cities across the U.S., with research from Stanford University's Center for Research on Education Outcomes showing that they often outperform traditional public schools when it comes to student achievement.

We propose the establishment of such a school here in Baltimore. Our goal is not just to close the achievement gap but also to provide our children with opportunities that will set them up for success throughout their lives.
