The Issue
- I recently completed a three-month recovery program and am now facing the daunting challenge of homelessness in Moncton. Despite my ongoing commitment to sobriety, I find myself without a private, stable place to live—a situation exacerbated by the barriers faced when searching for supportive housing. My experience is not unique, and it highlights the urgent need for safe support shelters for sober women in Moncton. These shelters would provide a critical stepping stone for women transitioning from recovery to independent living.
Currently, the system is fraught with hurdles: long waiting lists, exhaustive application processes, and numerous mandatory meetings, all of which pose significant risks to women who need immediate support to maintain their progress and avoid relapse. We need shelters without these burdensome requirements, allowing women who are fresh out of recovery to have a safe haven where they can continue their sobriety journey.
Such shelters would offer a private space where women can focus on transitioning back into daily life, including pursuing employment, securing a permanent residence, and continuing their online recovery programs.
Statistics show that women leaving recovery programs face higher risks of relapse when they lack stable housing. According to the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction, stable housing is a key determinant in preventing relapse and promoting long-term recovery success.
We urge local government officials and community leaders to collaborate in developing shelters specifically tailored for women in recovery. These shelters should not only provide a roof over their heads but also support services such as counselling, consultations for job placement, and direct pathways to affordable housing.
This initiative would empower women in our community, ensuring they have the necessary resources to rebuild their lives, maintain their sobriety, and contribute positively to society. Your support for this cause can make a significant difference.
Please sign this petition to help establish safe support shelters for sober women in Moncton, providing them with the essential tools and security they need for a successful transition.
