Establish Quiet Zone at NE Palmetto Drive S Railroad Crossing

Establish Quiet Zone at NE Palmetto Drive S Railroad Crossing
The Issue
In our community, our days and nights are constantly disrupted by the piercing sound of train horns, blaring 25-30 times a day. It's a noise that shatters the peace and disrupts the sleep and well-being of countless families. While we endure these disturbances, neighboring communities in St. Lucie County and Palm Beach County have already found reprieve through the establishment of Quiet Zones.
We understand public safety at railroad crossings is vitally important. Critical safety components such as crossing arms (gates) physically block the roadway, while flashing lights and bells alert people to a train's presence. These are the safety components people notice when approaching a railroad crossing. These are the safety components that provide real value and save lives.
A blaring train horn does not provide any value. It only creates a significant, negative impact to all residents who are forced to hear it - every day and night.
We are asking Martin County to begin the evaluation process needed to apply to the Federal Railroad Administration for the establishment of a Quiet Zone at the NE Palmetto Drive S railroad crossing. This involves coordinating with the Florida East Coast Railway to meet the necessary safety measures and make any required operational changes.
Establishing a Quiet Zone is a realistic and achievable goal that has been successfully implemented in our neighboring counties. By doing this, we can significantly reduce the noise pollution affecting our community, making our neighborhood a more serene place to live for ourselves and future generations.
We urge Martin County to recognize the impact of this noise and take the necessary steps to alleviate it. Let us join the ranks of communities that have prioritized residents' quality of life and established Quiet Zones.
