Establish permanent public toilet facilities and disabled toilets in Bridgend Town Centre
The Issue
Bridgend Town Centre severely lacks public toilet facilities with only Bridgend Bus Station offering toilet facilities which are only available at limited times Mon-Fri and Bridgend Indoor Market situated at the other end of the Town centre are nearly always closed.
As a father of 2 disabled children with lifelong disabilities we will no longer venture into the Town centre as my 11 year old son who has Down Syndrome soiling himself outside the toilets in Bridgend Indoor Market due to them being locked. We also witnessed a 93 year old gentleman suffer the same indignity 2 weeks later as my son did when he arrived at the toilets in Bridgend Indoor Market to empty his stoma bag as it was full. The toilets were locked and his bag starting to leak. He was taken to the traders toilet by which time his bag leaked all on the floor of the toilet. Nobody in this day and age should suffer this level of indignity in a society we all celebrate as inclusive.
For too long the people of Bridgend have been denied basic facilities within their Town centre and let down by Bridgend County Borough Council, a very basic human right especially within an inclusive society, this hugely affects every person visiting Bridgend, especially the elderly/infirm, people with disabilities and families with young children. Local Independent Councillors have campaigned tirelessly for number of years and will continue to campaign to get these facilities re-opened to the point where petitioning seems to be the only tool left to raise the issue. We have tried petitioning to the Welsh Assembly only to be told that this is a Local Authority issue and one that Bridgend County Borough Council needs to deal with. Let's get investment in our community and sign this petition to initiate change.
This petition is brought to you with the full support of Cllr Alan Wathan, Cllr Ian Williams, Cllr Michelle Blundell-Humphreys, Cllr Clair Webster and Cllr Kellie Evans, please feel free to contact anyone of us for any information and if you've had any bad experiences with toilets or lack of them in Bridgend, we'd only be too glad to highlight them on social media within this campaign. Thank you for your support.
