The Issue

In Mississippi, we are often told that if we care about our communities, we should vote. But we do not talk enough about what it can take for someone to actually participate. For a college student away from home, a parent working long hours, or someone without reliable transportation, participating can require navigating barriers that another voter may never have to think about. That does not mean they do not care. It means something being available does not always make it accessible.

That is why the Mississippi Access Project is calling for online voter registration and expanded early in-person voting opportunities in Mississippi. Right now, a Mississippian registering to vote generally must do so in person or submit an application by mail. The state’s Y’all Vote system allows people to download an application and allows already-registered voters with qualifying identification to update their information online, but it does not provide a general online registration process for new voters. Mississippi also provides in-person absentee voting for voters who meet specific qualifications, but it does not provide the broader early in-person voting opportunity MAP is advocating for.

For us, this is bigger than convenience. It is about whether the way we participate in democracy reflects the realities of the people democracy is supposed to serve. Your income should not determine how easily you can participate. Neither should whether you have reliable transportation, whether you can get away from work, or whether you are a college student trying to navigate the process for the first time. People living in poverty and historically underserved communities may experience these barriers differently, but this is not an issue belonging to one race, one generation, or one part of Mississippi. An equitable system should work for all of us.

We have also heard young people described as apathetic for too long. Through MAP, we have watched young Mississippians register to vote, collect petition signatures, have conversations in their communities, and step into organizing for the first time. We have seen what happens when people are given the information and resources to turn what they care about into action. The problem is not always that people do not care about democracy. Sometimes we have to ask whether democracy has been made accessible enough for them to participate in it.

That is why this petition is not where our work ends. MAP is building a youth-led coalition across several Mississippi schools and communities while conducting voter registration, civic education, grassroots organizing, policy research, and direct engagement around these issues. Our goal is to bring together 30,000 Mississippians behind these two changes and demonstrate that people across this state are ready to have a serious conversation about what voter access can look like in Mississippi.

We are not asking Mississippi to abandon the ways people already register or vote. We are asking our state to give eligible voters more ways to participate. We are not telling anyone who deserves their vote or what decision they should make when they receive a ballot. That decision belongs to them. We are fighting for a Mississippi where having fewer resources does not mean having fewer opportunities to make that decision for yourself.

If you believe your ZIP code, income, or circumstances should not determine how accessible democracy is to you, add your name. Help us build a coalition of 30,000 Mississippians calling for online voter registration and expanded early in-person voting opportunities.

The ballot belongs to all of us. Access to it should reflect that. Power Within Reach.
