Establish More Female-Only Beaches and Rock Pools in Sydney

Establish More Female-Only Beaches and Rock Pools in Sydney
The issue
As a proud greater Sydney resident, I deeply value the unparalleled beauty and freedom of our city’s beaches, ocean pools and waterways. However, like many women, I often feel unable to fully enjoy these spaces due to the lack of environments that prioritise our safety, privacy, and comfort. This is not merely about modesty or religion—it’s about creating spaces where women can feel at ease, free from judgement, discomfort, or the male gaze.
Currently, greater Sydney has just one female-only ocean pool, the only one in the Southern Hemisphere! This is an inadequate provision for a city home to over 2.5 million women. This limited availability restricts women’s access to our coastline and waterways and denies us the opportunity to enjoy these spaces in ways that respect our diverse needs.
Female-only beaches, ocean pools and waterways offer more than just privacy—they provide spaces for women managing health or medical needs, for survivors of domestic violence seeking solace and safety, and for women from religious backgrounds who require gender-separated environments. They are sanctuaries where women can feel respected, safe, and truly free to enjoy their time in nature.
By establishing more female-only beaches, ocean pools and waterways, greater Sydney can set an example of inclusivity and safety, ensuring every woman feels welcome and empowered to enjoy public spaces. Evidence also shows that access to natural environments significantly enhances mental and physical wellbeing, this not only a matter of equity but also one of public health.
I call on the three tiers of government to act now to expand the number of female-only beaches, ocean pools and waterways across the greater Sydney. Let us make our spaces truly accessible to all women, regardless of their background or circumstances.
Please sign this petition to support this important initiative. Together, we can create a city that champions freedom, respect, and inclusivity for all women.
