The Issue

The Northern Lights are one of the most extraordinary natural phenomena on Earth — a visible connection between the Sun and our planet, where solar energy transforms into light and color in our atmosphere.

They are not only a scientific phenomenon, but also a universal human experience. For millions of people around the world, witnessing the Northern Lights is a lifelong dream — a moment of wonder that connects us with nature, the universe, and each other.

Despite their global significance, there is currently no international day dedicated to recognizing the Northern Lights.

We believe this should change.

We are calling for the establishment of March 21 — the equinox — as the International Day of the Northern Lights.

This date is symbolically and scientifically meaningful:

It represents global balance and connection
It coincides with increased geomagnetic activity
It reflects the relationship between the Sun and Earth
This initiative aims to:

Promote education in space science and climate awareness
Inspire future generations through the beauty of science
Protect dark skies and natural environments
Celebrate cultural traditions connected to the Northern Lights
Encourage sustainable tourism in Arctic regions
We invite Finland — a country deeply connected to the Northern Lights — to lead this initiative at an international level.

By signing this petition, you are supporting the recognition of a phenomenon that belongs to all humanity.

Together, we can turn one of nature’s most breathtaking spectacles into a global day of science, culture, and inspiration.
