Establish Mandatory County Dog Licensing in Ohio County, KY

The Issue

I am a devoted dog rescuer and closely work with the director of our local shelter in Ohio County, Kentucky. Together, we witness how so many dogs lack proper care or accountability from their owners. It's high time we introduce a change: mandatory dog licensing in our county.

Dog licensing is not only a proven method to ensure dogs are vaccinated against harmful diseases like rabies, but it also empowers local authorities to keep track of pet owners and unreachable dogs. Currently, there are no official requirements in Ohio County to license dogs, leaving many at risk. When dogs are lost, injured, or abandoned, the lack of a registered owner can significantly complicate rescue and care efforts.

This accountability will not only protect dogs, but also the entirety of our community, as dog licensing has been shown to reduce the spread of diseases. In 2018, a study by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) confirmed that districts with lenient dog control laws experienced a much higher number of rabies cases than those with strict regulations.

Another critical aspect of this license is the revenue it can generate for our local shelter. Like hundreds of other animal shelters across the U.S., we rely heavily on donations and volunteers. This licensing fee could easily offset some of these costs and provide a stable income source that our shelter desperately needs.

The care and management of dogs in Ohio County should be a collective responsibility. Ensuring that all dogs have a license is a positive step towards achieving this. Let's make Ohio County an example of responsibility and commitment towards our canine friends. Sign the petition and ask our county to require all dogs to have a county dog license.
