Establish Legislation for Voluntary Paternal Responsibility in Unconsented Parenthood

The Issue

In the state of South Carolina and across the United States, women have the right to choose whether to continue a pregnancy or not, often without the male partner's consent. This decision-making power does not balance with the imposed financial obligations and responsibilities on men, even in situations where they may not have consented to paternity. Therefore, we must redress this imbalance.

According to a study conducted by the National Conference of State Legislatures, nearly 4 million U.S. children are born to unmarried parents every year. Under current laws, many of these men are legally bound to pay child support, regardless of their role in the decision-making process leading to birth.

This is not a call to remove parental responsibility, but only to reconsider it in cases where the decision to carry the child forward was unilateral. It is a call for justice and equality in paternity.

In Columbia, South Carolina, where this action begins, we recommend amending the relevant laws with provisions for voluntary paternal responsibilities in cases of unconsenting parenthood. To safeguard child welfare, such mechanisms should be paired with measures encouraging responsible sexual behaviors and decision-making.https://youtu.be/nAyfDOATafU?si=sncR-OaNoy4CpXwM
