My daughter is currently enrolled in a class where her teacher uses a natural oil diffuser and frequently wears a lot of natural oils. The scent from these oils is giving her frequent headaches and making it challenging for her to concentrate on her studies.

This situation is not unique to my daughter alone, as many children and adults are sensitive to fragrances, which can cause migraines, allergic reactions, and asthma attacks. Our children's health and learning environment should be a top priority.

Numerous studies have shown that more than 30% of the general population is affected by fragrance sensitivities. This is particularly concerning in a school setting where students should have the right to focus on their studies without the distraction and health implications posed by strong scents.

We must advocate for fragrance-free zones within our Auburn, CA schools. This change will ensure that all students, regardless of their sensitivities, can learn in a safe, comfortable, and distraction-free environment.

The solution is simple: implement policies that restrict the use of diffusers and strong-smelling products in classrooms and shared spaces. We can take inspiration from hospitals and workplaces that have successfully established fragrance-free policies to protect those at risk of adverse effects.
