Establish Designated Smoking Areas on University Grounds

The Issue

I, along with many other students on campus, have noticed the heavy use of tobacco products among our peers. This practice is not only harmful for the users but also for inhabitants of the campus, exposed to second-hand smoke. Adjusting the current 'no-smoking' policy to include designated smoking areas would be a solution that respects everyone's rights and limits public exposure to unwanted smoke.

According to the American Lung Association, secondhand smoke causes approximately 41,000 deaths among nonsmoking adults and 400 deaths in infants each year. Non-smokers who are exposed to secondhand smoke increase their disease risks by 20–30% (American Lung Association). Specifically for a university setting like ours, designating specific areas for smoking can significantly reduce these risks and make campus a healthier place for everyone.

The revision of our university’s policy on public smoking will not only rock the boat for increased overall health, but cultivate a better public space for all. Striking a balance between individual liberties to smoke and the rights of others to a clean, smoke-free environment is important to foster a nurturing academic environment.

Sign the petition to influence administrators to review their 'no-smoking' policy and establish designated smoking areas throughout the campus. Your support could bring about a change that benefits us all.
