As a family member of several truck drivers, I understand firsthand the daily struggles they face to deliver the supplies we need. The demand for their services is high in our area, and yet, there is no safe place for them to park their trucks when they come home to spend time with loved ones in Killeen. This situation not only affects my family but also many other hardworking men and women who drive these large vehicles.

In 2019 alone, Texas had over 600,000 registered semi-trucks (Texas Department of Motor Vehicles). With such a significant number of trucks operating within our state lines and considering that Killeen is a major hub due to its strategic location along Interstate 14 and U.S. Highway 190, it's clear that our city needs designated parking areas specifically designed for these large vehicles.

The lack of proper parking facilities poses safety risks as drivers are often forced to park in unsuitable locations or continue driving beyond their hours-of-service regulations set by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). This can lead to fatigue-related accidents which accounted for approximately 13% of all large truck crashes according to FMCSA data from 2017.

We urge the city officials of Killeen, Texas to recognize this pressing issue and take immediate action by establishing designated parking areas for semi-trucks. It's about ensuring safety on our roads while respecting the essential work done by these professionals who contribute significantly towards keeping our economy moving forward.
