Establish Cellphone Services on NWT Highways

Establish Cellphone Services on NWT Highways
The Issue
After a terrifying experience that could have cost my life, I am urging the relevant bodies to consider the implementation of reliable cellphone services on NWT (Northwest Territories) highways. Yesterday, I was being taunted by two men in a truck on my way to Alberta, with no means of communication to call for help.
Lack of mobile service on the NWT highways not only affects me, but countless others across the region. Such infrastructural shortcomings jeopardize the safety of drivers and their passengers, who could be left stranded without a lifeline in emergencies. This deficiency is augmented due to the territories' harsh and unpredictable climate, particularly in the winter months.
According to a 2017 CRTC report, only about a quarter of highways in northern Canada have access to mobile services. With around 44,541km of highways in NWT (NWT Bureau of Statistics), this could equate to more than 30,000 km of unserviced roadways, leaving travelers vulnerable.
Through this petition, we urgently call on the territorial government, the CRTC, and major telecom providers to take responsible action. We need to address this critical gap in our safety infrastructure by establishing reliable mobile connectivity along all NWT highways.
By signing this petition, you are not only supporting a safer NWT but a safer Canada. It's time to ensure that no one is left disconnected in these remote and often harsh environments again. Please sign this petition and join us on this important journey.
