Establish ARFID eating disorder support in Tower Hamlets

Establish ARFID eating disorder support in Tower Hamlets
The Issue
In Tower Hamlets, the absence of specialised support for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID) is causing significant distress to families like mine. My child struggles daily with severe eating and drinking restrictions, and it has reached a critical point where he is at risk of having no safe foods left. Despite numerous attempts to seek help from CAMHS and our GP, we were disheartened to find out that there are no services or guidance available for ARFID in Tower Hamlets.
The only specialised support for this condition is located at Great Ormond Street Hospital, but obtaining a referral has proven impossible, leaving us without options. This is not just a singular issue. Many families in our community face the same challenges, burdened by constant worry about their children's health and nutritional intake. ARFID is a recognised eating disorder, and Tower Hamlets should have the necessary infrastructure to address it effectively.
According to NHS policy, every child has the right to appropriate healthcare services. However, the current lack in Tower Hamlets means children like mine are deprived of the crucial intervention they need. Studies reveal that early intervention in eating disorders significantly increases the likelihood of positive health outcomes. Yet, without local services, our children are at a disadvantage compared to those in areas with accessible treatment facilities.
The establishment of a 'Feeding and Eating Disorders Service' in Tower Hamlets would ensure that no child is left to struggle without support. Such a service would provide families with the resources, advice, and treatment required to manage and overcome ARFID. It would alleviate the stress and fear parents face and offer a path to healthier futures for countless children.
We urge the local health authorities and government representatives to recognise the urgent need for these services and take action to establish a dedicated ARFID support system in Tower Hamlets. Please sign this petition to demand the creation of a "Feeding and Eating Disorders Service" in our community. Together, we can ensure that every child has access to the help they desperately need.
