Establish an animal control division in Streamwood

Establish an animal control division in Streamwood
The Issue
We are not asking for a full division of officers or even a temporary holding facility. Can we just have ONE dedicated, maybe a retired or soon to be retired caring and compassionate officer to help our village? One that can help to educate pet owners to be more responsible, and maybe transport any displaced pers to a local reacue, vet or facility until reunification is possible.
Many residents of Streamwood, Illinois, just like myself, have noticed a growing issue in our community: the presence of lost or escaped dogs and a significant number of feral cats roaming our neighborhoods. This isn't a new problem; it's been ongoing and demands urgent attention. Yet, despite this persistent challenge, the village of Streamwood has offered us little to no resources to address it.
Currently, if we come across stray animals in need, we're left with no choice but to contact the non-emergency police line, which subsequently advises us to dial 911. This system is far from ideal and does not provide a comprehensive support structure for managing our community’s animal issues.
We believe that Streamwood can do better – and should do better. By implementing a dedicated Animal Control Officer, we would ensure that stray and feral animals are handled humanely and efficiently, reducing the risk of potential safety hazards for both the animals and our residents. An animal control officer would be tasked with capturing stray animals, managing feral populations, and providing a tramspotation to a local shelter for lost pets while they await reunification with their owners.
Evidence suggests that towns with established animal control services see a reduction in pet homelessness and an increase in public safety. According to the National Animal Care & Control Association, communities that have invested in animal control not only improve the welfare of animals but also enhance overall public health and safety.
Furthermore, with adequate resources and training, an Animal Control Officer can educate our community on responsible pet ownership and work in collaboration with local veterinarians and animal shelters.
We are calling on the local government of Streamwood to take immediate action and invest in a fully operational Animal Control Officer.
By signing this petition, you’re supporting a safer and more caring community for both the people and animals of Streamwood.
Please sign and share this petition to urge our leaders to prioritize the establishment of an Animal Control Division in Streamwood.
