The Issue

We call on the City of Pleasanton to prioritize the establishment of a Train Quiet Zone, addressing the pressing issue of noise pollution caused by the increasing number of trains and their loud, disruptive horns.

Train noise significantly impacts the quality of life for thousands of residents, downtown businesses, and visitors who live, work, attend school, dine, or enjoy leisure time near the tracks.  While we appreciate the benefits of rail connectivity and prioritize safety, we believe Pleasanton can implement solutions that enhance both safety and peace of mind for the community.

Key Benefits of a Train Quiet Zone:

  • Improved Quality of Life:  Reduced noise pollution will create a calmer and more enjoyable environment for residents and visitors.
  • Economic Growth:  A Quiet Zone is an investment in Pleasanton’s future, attracting businesses and enhancing the downtown experience.
  • Community Health:  Less noise means better sleep and reduced stress, promoting overall well-being.
  • Progressive Action:  Quiet Zones are a hallmark of forward-thinking cities, demonstrating Pleasanton's commitment to innovation and community care.
  • Affordable Positive Impact:  Implementing safety measures for a Quiet Zone is a cost-effective improvement that benefits approximately 5 - 10% of the City's population.

Other Bay Area cities, such as Sunol, Fremont, Emeryville and San Jose have successfully introduced Quiet Zones, proving that reduced train noise and enhanced safety can coexist.  In Pleasanton’s case, lower-cost safety solutions are now available, making it more feasible than ever to achieve this goal.

Safety remains a top priority.  Train horns will still sound when engineers detect hazards near the tracks, ensuring public safety is not compromised. However, in a Quiet Zone, horns will not be mandatory at every crossing thanks to supplementary safety measures like median islands and additional gates.

Now is the time for Pleasanton to act.  By signing this petition, you can help convince City officials that establishing a Train Quiet Zone is a worthy investment in the community's future.  Together, we can create a safer, healthier, and quieter environment for all.
