Establish a Toddler and Disability-Friendly Section in Our Local Park

The Issue

My family, like many others, deeply cherishes the sense of community and enjoyment that our local park brings. However, it brings me great pain to acknowledge that my two sons, both just 2 years old, cannot partake in this joy as safely and freely as other children. One of my loved ones lives with Down syndrome, which brings with it, unique challenges that our current park is ill-equipped to accommodate.

This reality is not unique to my family. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, roughly one in every 700 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome, which makes up about 6,000 babies each year (CDC, 2020). In addition, public spaces frequently fail to cater to the requirements of toddlers, and the nitty-gritty of their safety is often overlooked. For instance, 50% of all playground accidents happen due to a lack of age-appropriate play equipment (The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, 2002).

What we propose is a solution that is inclusive, considerate, and promotes safety and equality among our children. A park segment dedicated to toddlers and children with disabilities would not only safeguard their wellbeing but would foster a sense of belonging and cater to their unique needs.

Let's uphold the rights of all children to play and grow in a safe, embracing environment. If you, too, believe in an inclusive community where every child has the right to safe and suitable play areas, lend your voice.
