Establish a Support Group for Parents & Families with Autistic Children

The Issue

As a parent of a 6-year-old boy diagnosed with autism, I face numerous challenges daily. My son has behavioral issues, which occasionally manifest as aggression, making our day-to-day life a struggle. I believe sharing our experiences and exchanging ideas with others navigating similar situations will be beneficial to everyone involved.

Therefore, this petition is to establish a peer support group for parents and families with children on the autism spectrum. This group's creation will provide a platform for families like ours to share stories, advice, and coping strategies. It is known that approximately 1 in 54 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) according to estimates from CDC's Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring (ADDM) Network.

However, supportive resources for families are often limited, especially in terms of peer-led groups. The group would serve as a vital resource for families seeking direction, needing to vent, or requiring guidance from individuals with firsthand experience. This is critical, as the mental health of caregivers can impact the child's developmental progress.

Issues related to autism don't only affect the child diagnosed, but also their families. We urge those who understand the importance of peer support to sign this petition. Let's work together in establishing a support group that provides a caring and understanding environment for parents and families with autistic children. Please sign this petition to make this crucial resource a reality.
