Establish a state Commission on Fathers, Men, and Boys

Establish a state Commission on Fathers, Men, and Boys
The Issue
In Maryland, fathers face unique challenges that often go unnoticed and unaddressed. As a parent to my beautiful daughter, Amari, who was diagnosed with autism, I've witnessed firsthand the importance of having the right systems in place—not just for the sake of her well-being, but for my ability to provide her with the support, resources, and opportunities she needs to thrive. This deeply personal experience has compelled me to recognize the necessity of establishing a state commission dedicated to addressing the needs of fathers, men, and boys.
The establishment of a Maryland State Commission on Fathers, Men, and Boys is a proactive step towards ensuring that all fathers across our state can remain present, engaged, and empowered in their families' lives. Currently, support structures for fathers are lacking, which often limits their capacity to effectively contribute to their children's development and their communities.
Statistics reveal that children with involved fathers are more likely to succeed academically, exhibit higher levels of emotional security, and are less prone to engage in delinquent behavior as they grow. Yet, societal expectations and inadequate support systems can create barriers that prevent fathers from fulfilling these vital roles. By creating a dedicated commission, we can address these barriers, develop policies that promote fatherhood engagement, and foster a culture that values the indispensable contributions of men in familial and societal contexts.
The initiative is not just about addressing the immediate needs of fathers like myself, but about fostering a more inclusive society where the unique challenges faced by men and boys are recognized and appropriately addressed. The commission can work towards offering parenting programs, mental health support, professional development opportunities, and tackle issues like unemployment and discrimination that disproportionately affect men.
We, the people of Maryland, urge our state leaders to take decisive action to establish this commission. This is a vital first step in ensuring that our communities benefit from the positive impact of engaged and supported fathers. By signing this petition, you are contributing to a future where every father has the opportunity to make a meaningful difference in their child's life.
