The Issue

As a passionate BMX rider and part of a vibrant community of skateboarders, skaters, scooter, and BMX riders, I often find myself having to leave the confines of Durham City to engage in my favorite sport. Many of us share the same plight: traveling out of town to other areas is costly and often fraught with logistical challenges, like buses not allowing bikes onboard. The lack of nearby facilities suitable for extreme or street sports enthusiasts within our city has become a significant hurdle for many of us who are seeking a welcoming space to practice and enjoy our hobbies with friends and family.

Durham City deserves its own skatepark or street plaza, a dedicated space where local enthusiasts can safely engage in their passions without the burden of extended travel. Such a facility is not only a necessary resource for locals, but it can also potentially attract visitors from outside the city, bringing additional business and vibrancy to our local community.

Other towns and cities across the UK have invested in providing such spaces for their communities, recognizing the benefits of having a designated area where young and old alike can practice their skills, build friendships, and engage in a healthy lifestyle. Skateparks have been shown to foster community spirit, reduce youth crime, and provide a productive outlet for energy. According to Statista, there were approximately 85,000 skateboarding participants aged 5-16 in England in 2019 alone. This highlights the growing popularity of skating sports and the need for proper facilities to support these hobbies.

We envision a thriving place in Durham City, a safe environment that will cater to skateboarders, skaters, scooter, and BMX riders alike, encouraging them to pursue their interests actively and safely. Implementing such a site not only supports a healthy lifestyle but also promotes inclusivity and community engagement, essential values for any city.

Join us in our quest to establish this much-needed resource in Durham City. Sign the petition to show your support for a community skatepark or street plaza that can become a hub for excitement, exercise, and inclusivity. Your signature could be the momentum needed to make this dream a reality for countless enthusiasts in our city. Let's provide a space we all can be proud of within Durham.
