Establish a Sexual Assault Clinic at Royal Victoria Hospital

The Issue

I am, like many others, a survivor of sexual assault. Following my traumatic experience, I sought immediate help at the Royal Victoria Hospital. Despite the urgency of the situation, I was asked to drive to another hospital in Orillia after waiting for two distressing hours. It is painful to relive the experience, but it's important to shed light on the gap in our healthcare system.

Living in a city with nearly 150,000 residents, it is unacceptable that survivors like me are turned away and, instead of receiving critical immediate care, are asked to drive to distant places like Orillia or Orangeville. Immediate access to a sexual assault kit can be crucial in not only the prosecution of attackers but also the physical and psychological wellness of survivors (Office for Victims of Crime, 2016).

Not everyone has access to transportation to get to other hospitals in different cities, also medications and testing is sometimes required after sexual assaults. Let make it easier for victims of sexual assault to access help within their community.

I urge Royal Victoria Hospital and local decision makers to establish a dedicated Sexual Assault clinic to provide timely and empathetic healthcare to survivors. By doing this, we can ensure comprehensive immediate care for survivors, aiding their recovery process and supporting justice. This is not just my plea. It echoes the voices of thousands of survivors in our city who deserve better.
