The Issue

As someone who cherishes the joy and camaraderie of Halloween, I've often found myself torn between celebrating this beloved holiday and preparing for school assignments due the next day. This struggle is not unique to me but shared by many students across Virginia. We believe that having a day off after Halloween would allow us to fully enjoy the festivities, rest well, and return to our studies refreshed and ready.

Halloween is more than just costumes and candy; it's an opportunity for community bonding, creative expression, and cultural celebration. However, according to a survey by the National Sleep Foundation, 45% of adolescents get insufficient sleep on school nights. This lack of rest can lead to decreased academic performance and increased stress levels.

By establishing a rest day after Halloween, we can ensure that students have time to catch up on classwork or complete any missing assignments without sacrificing their participation in this cherished tradition. It's not just about taking a break; it's about promoting balance between our personal lives and academic responsibilities.

I acknowledge that we also have a day off on Thursday and Friday, but an alternate solution if you don’t feel comfortable giving us one extra day off is a possible 2 hour delay on Wednesday November 1st or even switching Thursday and Wednesday around so we have parent teacher conferences on Wednesday and Friday instead of Thursday and Friday.

We call upon our adults in power to recognize this need for balance in our lives as students. Let us celebrate without worry or guilt - let us have one day off after Halloween so we can be well-rested learners ready for what lies ahead. Please take this into consideration and I hope you make the right decision for flint hill students. Please sign this petition if you support better student wellness through balanced schedules!
