When I reached out to the neighboring city of Peoria, IL, to understand how I could get a library card, I was met with unexpected news. I was informed about the necessary procedure: obtain a library card from my own city first, which would grant me free access to their public library. However, I was disheartened to learn that, not everyone has that same luxury.  Tere is no public library in West Peoria, IL residents are left without direct access to the knowledge, resources, and community spaces that a public library provides. Even worse, we are required to pay a hefty fee of $170.00 to access the public library in Peoria.

This situation is a stark reminder of the inequalities that exist even within neighboring communities. A library isn’t just a building filled with books; it’s a cornerstone for community learning, a sanctuary for personal growth, and a hub for cultural engagement. It offers free resources that empower residents of all ages to pursue education, employment, and leisure activities with greater ease.

Children, who should be developing early reading habits, are denied equal opportunities as their peers in nearby cities. Families who may benefit from literacy programs, technological access, and community events miss out on these enriching experiences. This injustice not only affects individual growth but also our community's overall development.

I call upon the local government officials, educators, and community leaders to consider the pressing need for a public library in West Peoria, IL. Establishing a library here would democratize education, bridge resource gaps, and enable an informed, educated community. There are actionable steps we can take towards this goal, such as securing funding through state or federal grants, collaborating with local universities, and encouraging community-driven initiatives. If building a library is not in the budget, how about considering a contract for services within another libraries district? This option would allow free library card access to all of West Peoria.
