Establish a Memorial Reflection Area at Minooka Community High School for Suicide Awareness

Establish a Memorial Reflection Area at Minooka Community High School for Suicide Awareness
The Issue
This issue is close to our hearts as we mourn the loss of our dear friend and student, Hunter McDonald, who tragically took his own life in April 2024. We believe Minooka Community High School must take significant steps to provide support, understanding, and a safe space for students to reflect and know they are not alone in their struggles.
In the loving memory of Hunter, we propose the establishment of a Memorial Reflection Area within the school grounds. This space would not only commemorate Hunter's life but serve as a heartfelt reminder that it's okay to seek help when battling mental health issues. Furthermore, this step could help actively combat the increasing rates of suicide among teenagers, which according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has risen by 76% between 2007 and 2017, marking these issues an urgent public health concern.
Importantly, according to leading child psychiatrists, such safe zones in educational institutions provide significant comfort and assistance to students dealing with mental health problems. Building a memorial reflection area at Minooka Community High School shows that as a community we are mindful of these struggles, and reinforces our commitment to provide help and ensure every student remembers: You are not alone.
Please, sign this petition to affirm your support towards this initiative. Your signature could play a vital role in advocating for this much-needed change within our school environment.
