The Issue

My ‘ohana has chosen to commit to the path of learning and preserving our native Hawaiian language. Since 2021, my eldest daughter began her educational journey with ‘Aha Pūnana Leo o Waialua, and in 2022, my second daughter joined her. However, upon graduating from ‘Aha Pūnana Leo, my eldest daughter had to transition to Ke Kula Kaiapuni Waiau in Pearl City, O’ahu. These schools are in two completely opposite directions, a challenging situation that requires our family and other ‘ohana to trade children and split the long drives.

The Hawaiian language (‘ōlelo Hawaiʻi) is a vital part of our culture and identity. Preserving it through education in kaiapuni (immersion) schools is a crucial step towards keeping our traditions alive. However, in central O’ahu, there are few options for families dedicated to this mission. The limited number of kaiapuni schools and their locations make it difficult for ‘ohana to access such valuable educational resources.

The current scarcity of conveniently located kaiapuni schools forces many families like mine to cover great distances—often resulting in logistical and financial strains. Ensuring that every child has the opportunity to learn and grow in their native language without such hurdles should be a priority.

We are calling on the Hawaiʻi Department of Education to establish a kaiapuni school within one of the already established public schools in the central O’ahu area. This action would provide a local resource for ‘ohana desiring to continue their ‘ōlelo Hawaiʻi journey within the public school system.

By adding a kaiapuni program centrally, we can provide better access to cultural education and uphold our commitment to revitalizing the Hawaiian language. The need is urgent, and the potential benefits are immense—not only for individual students and families but for the Hawaiian community at large.

Sign this petition to urge the Hawaiʻi Department of Education to prioritize the establishment of a kaiapuni school in central O’ahu, ensuring the perpetuation of our language and culture for generations to come.
