As a former cheerleader and current coach of our Junior Football League (JFL) cheer program for the past six years, I have seen firsthand the positive impact that cheerleading can have on young people. Our JFL program has grown four times larger under my leadership, demonstrating the strong interest and enthusiasm in our community for this sport.

Despite this growth at the junior level, there is currently no cheerleading squad at our local high school. This leaves many young athletes without an opportunity to continue their passion as they move into higher grades. In addition to promoting physical fitness and teamwork, studies show that participation in extracurricular activities like cheerleading can boost academic performance and mental health among students (American Psychological Association).

Establishing a high school cheerleading squad in Tolono would provide these benefits to more of our youth while also fostering community spirit at school events. We call upon the local school board to recognize this need and take action.
