Establish a Green Space & Walking Path on St. Roch Avenue, District D.

The Issue

We, along with many others, live in the District D of St. Roch, New Orleans, LA. Unlike our neighbors in District C, we lack the accessible green space and established walking path along the neutral ground on St. Roch Avenue. This petition is more than just about a beautification project on the neutral ground, it's about community unity, green infrastructure, and safety.

Research shows a clear correlation between well-maintained public spaces, decreased crime rates, and the increased overall well-being of residents. In our own community, crime data illustrates a substantial reduction in crime rate in District C, blessed with a landscaped walking trail along St. Roch Avenue, compared to our side in District D, without such amenities. If we have evidence that the simple act of adding a walking path increases safety and decreases crime, why not pursue it?

In a city known for its heavy downpours flooding, the proposal to add bioswales and rain gardens along the new walking path on the neutral ground of St. Roch Avenue offers dual benefits. Not only would these additions beautify our section of the community and create safer, more walkable streets, but they also play a significant role in storm water management. Just look at the success  of the new development of a Stormwater Park under North Claiborne. If we have existing models of how to manage stormwater and beautify communities with practical projects that improve quality of life, why not implement them?

Our proposed permeable walking path would stretch from N. Johnson Street to Florida Avenue in District D, providing our section of the neighborhood with an equal share of resources and opportunities enjoyed in the District C part of St. Roch. We propose adding native plants to enhance local biodiversity, and a clear, safe walking path to connect our neighborhood, encouraging unity, exercise, and safer streets.

Recently we planted a small native plant garden and added a Welcome to St. Roch sign on St. Roch Avenue and North Johnson St. The result was immediately transformative for the area. As a result of the beautification project there has been a significant decrease in litter and flooding in this stretch of the neutral ground. The reactions from neighbors have been overwhelmingly positive and the shared feelings of pride that have come from this project are tangible. Now we ask, if we know manageable projects improve the neighborhood, why stop there?

It's time we pay attention to the District D section of St. Roch, planting purposefully to address stormwater managment and unite the community of St. Roch. Support our petition and help us achieve walkable, greener, and safer streets for all! Sign today to make a change for a safer, greener, and more united St. Roch.
