Establish a fund for children escaping dangerous homes
The issue
In Australia, 45,000 children needed to be taken out of their homes by child protective services. However, not every child would be able to get those services or be saved. If as a collective society, we work towards building up a fund for children, they can have the courage to escape, to get to that first step to get on their feet while the clogged-up system gets to them. If everyone were to pay 1 more dollar of taxes, we could build up 16 million dollars for children in need. As a country, we need this. Australia has always been the ones to test new ideas to benefit its people, if we make this action, others in the world will too. In the world, 6/10 children suffer from maltreatment. IN a standard classroom of 25, that means around 16 of them would be silently suffering, since if they did speak up, then what? Suffer more abuse until the system can save them if they get that far? We need a system that allows for children to build up a fund in order to be able to live even if just for a short enough timeframe to escape. It can bring more carers, more people that could potentially save the youth.
Furthermore, this petition would lead to big, clear changes.
- We can make this nation of ours another leader in laws to help the youth in ways some may not have considered.
- We make it so that we create more protective services to help those truly in need.
- We create opportunities for youth who may not have it, even if it's 'simply' a net to assist older teens with emancipation from abusers.
- Our government proves it cares about our citizens, due to just how important an issue it is.
- We finally fulfill the wish of an Author speaking of these issues from the 1800's.
I was inspired to make the petition due to the book Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. The book revolves around a girl who lived in England in the 1830's. The titular character was abused by her family and sent off to a cruel boarding school. From there, Jane fled to a home that while caring, she was working while underaged for a man who hardly viewed her as someone until they fell in love. Does this story seem like it wouldn't work in the modern age? Well of course, we have laws against this, yet Jane had to take these opportunities to escape. When she fled that home, she had barely any coins to her name and nearly died to a storm. If I were to only say that in a vacuum, you'd be able to think that was an event that truly happened. Within this world, we say that young people are the future, yet even since the 1800's we've seen how we never practise what we preach. Every time we act like crabs in a bucket, bringing down young people and removing any chance for them to escape. We need to be better. We HAVE to be better.
Not everything is clear-cut physical abuse either, mental abuse and grooming is each something that can shatter a person's psyche, yet both can't be seen by others. If we create this fund, we can help get people into therapy and other resources without a home paying for it. This whole fund is a safety net to protect the youth. Looking back into a past example, Charlotte Bronte, the author of Jane Eyre, was sent off to a boarding school and multiple of her sisters died. Some people wouldn't be able to handle that, yet now we have the resources in order to stop this happening to more people. We can protect families from one another nearly instantly; we can monitor those children better when they come forward before the system can save them and we can stop repeating mistakes of the past by making a solution that would only cost each person a mere dollar.
Now, I want to leave you with worldwide evidence. There are hundreds of charities made for children, yet those are always something people view as a small issue. We need to see that if this number of charities have a goal, it's for a reason. We treat cancer as a top priority to find a cure for, so why not something else deadly to the weak and vulnerable? Make a stand, sign this petition, and we will bring this to our government before the upcoming elections. One step at a time, one community at a time, one state at a time, and we'll have reached unity and safety in no time.
