Establish a domestic violence offender registry in North Carolina

Establish a domestic violence offender registry in North Carolina
The Issue
As a survivor of domestic violence and a mother, I have firsthand experience of the hidden dangers lurking when the histories of abusers remain obscured. Too often, survivors must endure the trauma of not just the initial abuse but also the arduous, encumbering task of proving harm after it's inflicted. This is not only unfair but outright perilous, leaving families vulnerable and unprotected.
In North Carolina, domestic violence incidents continue to shatter lives and families, leaving a devastating ripple effect through our communities. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner in the United States. On a typical day, more than 20,000 phone calls are placed to domestic violence hotlines nationwide. Yet, without a transparent record of offenders, survivors are left in the dark, with little means to ensure their safety and that of their beloved ones.
A proactive and practical solution exists: establishing a Domestic Violence Offender Registry in North Carolina. Such a registry would serve as a critical resource, providing visibility into the past behaviors of convicted abusers and aiding survivors in making informed decisions about their safety. By making this information accessible, we can create a safer environment, prevent repeat offenses, and hold perpetrators accountable.
Other states have already implemented similar registries, witnessing substantial success in reducing domestic violence repeat offenses and empowering survivors. For example, Tennessee's Savanna's Law which created the nation's first public registry of repeat domestic violence offenders, and North Carolina should follow suit.
Let us act with urgency and determination to stand with survivors and families across our state. By signing this petition, you are advocating for the creation of a Domestic Violence Offender Registry in North Carolina, supporting a system designed to prioritize safety, knowledge, and justice. Together, we can foster a community that stands tall against domestic violence, protecting the most vulnerable among us. Sign now and be part of this crucial change.
