Establish a Dog Park at Barry Park in Medford, MA

The Issue

We, the undersigned residents of Medford, MA, are writing to petition for the establishment of a safe, well-maintained dog park at Barry Park. We believe that a dog park would significantly enhance the quality of life for dog owners and the community as a whole, fostering a sense of community and promoting responsible pet ownership.

Currently, dog owners will let their dogs off leash at Barry park, or go to the nearby tennis courts so the dogs can socialize and run around off leash.

A dog park would increase dog and human safety, foster a greater sense of community, and reduce friction between dog owners and non-dog owners in these public areas.

In Barry Park, the existing fencing on the South West side could be used to set up a dog park along that area. Alternatively one could be set up on the northern part of the park by the trees, opposite the kid's playground.

Given the number of dogs in the area, this would be a massive help towards keeping public areas safe and clean, and giving the community a place to socialize.

Why We Need a Dog Park:

Enhanced Dog Well-being: A dog park provides a safe, off-leash environment for dogs to exercise, socialize, and burn off energy, reducing stress and improving their overall well-being.

Community Building: Dog parks are social hubs where dog owners can connect, share experiences, and build friendships, fostering a stronger sense of community.

Responsible Pet Ownership: Dog parks encourage responsible pet ownership by providing a designated space for dogs to socialize and exercise, reducing the likelihood of unwanted behaviors or accidents in residential areas.

Improved Public Spaces: A well-maintained dog park can enhance the aesthetics and functionality of our public spaces, creating a more enjoyable environment for all residents.

Increased Exercise Opportunities: Dog parks offer a convenient and accessible way for dog owners to get exercise, contributing to a healthier and more active community.

Proposed Dog Park Features:

Fenced-in Area: A secure, fenced-in area to ensure the safety of dogs and the surrounding community.

Clean and Well-Maintained Surfaces: To ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for dogs and owners.

Water Fountains and Waste Bag Stations: To promote responsible pet ownership and maintain cleanliness.

Seating Areas: To provide a comfortable space for dog owners to relax and socialize.

Call to Action:

We urge the Medford City Council, Medford Park Division, and relevant authorities to seriously consider our request and take the necessary steps to establish a dog park in our community. We believe that a dog park would be a valuable asset for Medford, enhancing the lives of our residents and their beloved pets.
